I'm just bumping this thread and adding my voice to the "an upgrade option would be nice" because I'm currently trying to figure out which subscription tier best suits my needs for the moment (while knowing that down the line I may want to upgrade).
I think it's more likely that people don't bother. There are likely a lot more people who want to upgrade, myself included, who are too busy to bother with such nonsense. That is silly. Your logic does not follow. The opportunity to take more money for services is being missed. Personally, my time is more valuable than money. I wouldn't bother. It needs to be resolved. This is a very basic issue.
It's 2021. Still has not been resolved. Shameful really. Note that this thread is the top result when you search for "How to upgrade dnd beyond subscription."
Fix it.
Stop making excuses.

Not saying that an option to upgrade wouldn't be nice (I found this thread looking at how to do so), but as someone who works with Finance and IT systems, something that seems obvious to us a customers can be a nightmare on the backend. If the use case wasn't built from the get-go, it can get hairy. Pretty sure they have to deal with regulations involving pre-payments, account balancing, etc. My guess is that the feature is on a list, but at a low priority..
I just submitted a ticket request to upgrade, hoping for a prorated cost with the remaining time left on my Hero tier, and hoping that all the content I purchased is transferred over in the upgrade.
I'll post again detailing the process. Hope it is as smooth as others have had here.
I don’t question the skills of the development team, perhaps the direction they are being sent in. We have been in quarantine lockdown for quite a while now and I have seen no announcements as to a TTRPG emulator being developed for this platform so it leads me to this... If I want to play a module that I purchased online: If I do it through DnDBeyond my game is all theater of the mind or I give all the players full access to the book so they can see the same maps but we still can move tokens around to flush out the details of combat. If I can have tokens and maps by buying it on another platform such as Roll20, despite being of lower quality than this site, it is far more effective and useful for my group’s gameplay. It is becoming harder and harder to justify buying a second digital copy of something and if I have to choose, I’ll choose the inferior option that actually gives my party a playing field, maps, tokens, etc...
So while the quality of content is great, the utility of DnDBeyond is becoming less and less relevant, which is a shame because if we had maps and tokens, it’d help justify buying sets of digital dice too.

Please see my response to you in the other thread where you posted your concerns about this.
Support got back to me. You can cancel your current subscription (none of your sourcebooks you've bought are tied to the subscription) then you can purchase the tier you want, in my case Master Tier. As soon as I canceled my Hero Tier, I purchased the Master Tier - all sourcebooks, campaigns, and characters were there as before with the lower tier. I had to click nothing, move nothing, or select nothing. All upgrades were there instantly on my campaigns.
Support messaged me immediately after I cancelled Hero and bought the Master Tier to let me know that I was being refunded the prorated amount left on my Hero Tier.
Simple and easy to upgrade. All they need is to state on the subscription page that the sourcebooks and characters aren't tied to your current subscription. (If it is stated somewhere, I clearly missed it.)

Yours was the very last post and exactly the response I was hoping to find. Thank you.
I was wondering if I would have to hassle with trying to find out what email address of theirs to use. It sounds like all you did was not worry about any of that nonsense. You just canceled your Hero Tier subscription, paid for the new Master Tier subscription, and then the D&D Beyond support staff contacted you on their own to let you know about the refund. I just now paid for the Legendary Bundle after subscribing to the Hero Tier three days ago and after buying it I decided to upgrade to Master Tier. There was an "Upgrade" button but clicking on that took me to the "Cancel Subscription" page which... lead me searching the internet and finding this forum post here.
If I had seen the first few posts of this thread only, I would have just given up and not said anything even though I have upgraded and have three months of Hero that is essentially wasted now - so add another point for 'The number of people wanting this is higher than the amount who speak up'.
Thank you to everyone who came back to the thread and gave their updates on how easy it was to fill a ticket and get a response. While a couple of people have mentioned maybe the actual button is a nightmare on the backend, I agree that the Manage Subscriptions page needs to be a little more clear on how to since it only says that you have to cancel your first subscription first.
So, I finally did the switch. On May 11 is when I bought the Hero Tier subscription then on June 4, I canceled my Hero Tier subscription and then immediately bought the Master Tier subscription. Going through the process you are asked to give a response, so I told them I wanted to do a subscription upgrade. I have yet to hear back from anyone about giving me a refund for my Hero Tier. So as of this point, I have paid full price for two tiers - the Hero and the Master.
Lol now trying to do this same thing. It'd be kind of nice if it was addressed instead of the DNDbeyond site staff just making snarky comments on the first page of responses. Get out of here
To share a bit of good news with those who have long been frustrated by this: On last week’s Developer’s update, they mentioned that there will soon be a new process for upgrading subscriptions that should be easier and more transparent.
I finally realized I could just make a bunch of blank character sheets, cancel my subscription, and be done with it. Still buy the books, but don't really need the subscription long term.
EDIT: Turns out it doesn't work like it used to. Used to be that you could edit characters you had but not create new ones. Now it appears you can have ONLY 6 active characters. So I ended up deleting a lot. Having the characters on Roll20 is much more important in the Covid Times.
For those interested I changed my subscription from Hero to Master following the instructions listed here.
It was really scary hitting the cancel button for my Hero Subscription, but once I did I just selected the Master Subscription for purchase and I was up and running with no delays or loss.
I sent support an email asking for assistance and explaining what I was doing and the whole process took just a couple of days to complete including having my account credited with a remaining balance from my Hero Subscription.
Big Thanks to the Support Team!
I hope my experience may help those who are considering moving to the Master Subscription easier.

Hopefully when WotC builds their in-house version of D&D Beyond/Roll20 for 6th Edition, they incorporate that from the outset.
Just putting my voice here to back up the "bring a upgrade button" :)
Just bought the big sourcebook bundle and want to share with my players.. :)
