I upgraded from Hero Tier to Master Tier subscription last week on Thursday morning (5/21). It took them until yesterday (5/27) to get around to me. While it was a little frustrating, I understand, because it's quarantine and it was also Memorial Day Weekend. My support rep very courteously and quickly gave me the refund for the remaining amount on my Hero Tier subscription, since my bank had already processed the full payment on the Master Tier. She explained that there was a high volume of support tickets slowing them down, too.
So basically, I don't have any real complaints, but I do think that this isn't the best way to handle it. No one should have to wait a week to get their money situation handled, or even to get a response. It started to foster some suspicion and worry from me. But if you're looking to change subscriptions and aren't desperately in need of the money, then you'll be safe swapping. You'll have immediate access to the new features, it just may take a while to get the money all sorted out.
Still like this many years in. Not being able to manage my campaign with my players because of this is certainly extremely frustrating, and with no self service system and customer service taking a week to process this is an F- customer experience.
My personal fear with the current cancel -> resubscribe at higher tier process is loss of self-generated content more than money/refunds/etc. The Free subscription has a limit of what...eight character sheets or something? And Hero tier is unlimited. So if I have something like thirty character sheets on Hero tier, then have to cancel to upgrade to Master, do I lose those character sheets? How would they choose which ones go away? I've looked through the forums and (thus far) been unable to find anything that touches on this aspect of the existing upgrade-less subscription model.

That said, an upgrade button would be rad.
The characters are not deleted, but only 6 will be accessible until the new sub kicks in.
Sorry, if this isris an old post but I'm posting if there's anyword of progress at all for a simple easy way to upgrade.
I've been hero tier member since August of last year. At the time I wasn't making much dough (still ain't but I can handle and prepare for $55 annual fee) but I'm looking to upgrade just because of the content sharing capability.
I also understand from previous posts that this isn't a feature that's frequently requested that the coding team prioritizes new content and I get that. Just seems like for a website that has subscriptions that this would be a common/standard feature that such a site should have.
Looks like the cancel and re-subscribe is the answer rather than develop a upgrade button. Clear instructions should be available on how this works should be provided. The best I found is on this thread. They may be losing opportunities as most potential upgraders will never speak up.
Well, I found this thread after I followed the instructions to cancel my Hero Tier Subscription first. I guess I figured that after canceling it I would be given an option to subscribe to the Master Tier, but that wasn't the case. It looks like I am stuck until the Hero Tier runs out in three weeks or they get around to answering my support request that I filled out right after canceling. I agree with the above sentiments - there should be an easier way. Even a clear set of instructions and a link to where to go for the support should be there. Instead, all that is there is "Cancel your current subscription first" and nothing else. Add me to the chorus.
+ still would think an option to upgrade-downgrade between tiers would be interesting and would make the decision on a subscription easier for me.. right now it's sounding like a hassle so I'm not sure what type of tier subscription I would want..

To be fair, even though the process wasn't that intuitive, they did respond to my support request really quickly and the process worked fine. I just wish the steps were laid out better.
I spent a bit of time trying to work out how to upgrade. Finally resorted to google search and that got me here. After reading the first few posts I realised there is no upgrade option...lol.
If there was a simple upgrade button for a yearly sub that goes from hero to master, where they just discount the master level with your existing hero level amount, I would have done it by now.
Since i have to resort to email and the hassle that involves, and waiting a week for support to get back to you, also getting a refund back to my paypal would be horrible. All in all, I won't be upgrading, seems like too much of a hassle. I will just wait till my hero expires and then renew as master. Hope I don't become a DM before that happens.
I have read a lot of posts from people like me. Too lazy, or don't want to deal with support or banks/paypal. So instead they either don't upgrade or like me will just wait. Now consider if I quit DnD before my Hero sub runs out, then I won't even renew or upgrade. So either way dndbeyond could make more money out of a simple upgrade button.
Anyways +1 for an upgrade option. Or at the very worst, put some info on how to do it via support on the subscriptions page. Having to search google is never something a customer should need to do to get a quick answer. Should be right there in sub page.
As one of my players's character died last session, we are right now doing an online character creation before the game tomorrow. I wanted to share with him the new Tasha's book, to look into the options there, so I decided it is finally time to upgrade from the Hero subscription to the Master subscription. I must say I am very disappointed to find out, and also being confirmed in this thread, that it is not a possibility to upgrade subscription withouth cancelling the current subscription fist! I actually find it quite ridiculous! I recently bought the Legendary Bundle, and had all the books in an instant. As a software developer I can't see any technical reason why the same shouldn't be the case with subscriptions. (I also can't believe WotC doesn't want even more money from me!) The next game is tomorrow, so I don't have time to wait a week or so for support to change my subscription manually. We'll stick to the PHB options this time as well. And, at least for now, I won't bother upgrading after all...
Seriously? That was your response? The original question was not about the specifics of what they owe. It was about the general philosophy of Fandom. I think it is a really legitimate question. Will Fandom double charge me if I upgrade my subscription or not? What does it hurt to be honest with your customers?
By the way, the manage subscription page does not even show what the cost would be to go up to the next tier. So those of us considering going up don't know what financial impact it will have on us. If you want more money from those of us who pay your salary then fix the issue with upgrades. Encouraging people to cancel their subscription in order to upgrade to the next tier is counter-intuitive and frankly pretty dumb on Fandoms part. Think about it.. Lets say I cancel my subscription and then I find out what the next tier costs and I say "Wow I can't afford that." But now my subscription is canceled so there is a good chance I will just leave it that way. Not a good business model in my opinion.
It is amazing that this post was 2 years ago and you still have a horrible process for managing subscriptions.
I love D&D Beyound but come on. At least tell us if Fandom will charge me the full price for the master tier on top of what I have already paid for the hero tier. That is how you can "be excellent to each other."
Yeah it's really silly. I emailed, got impatient, and did the cancel/resubscribe. Someone from DNDBeyond then responded to my email and said they'd refund the remainder of my first subscription. So, they do care and are responsive! It's just very, very weird that they don't have an easy way to do this after all this time. They've got a great product/service! Of course people are going to try it out and then want more.

How do they determine which six?
You pick the 6.
When you say 6 aren't accessible, does that mean you can't even view them, or they're just uneditable?
You pick which 6 are available. The rest cannot be viewed until the sub is renewed or “upgraded”

Three years later! Still interested. The subscription page won't even tell me how much the Master Tier costs.

I am flabbergasted that there is still no simple upgrade solution after reading through all of these reasonable responses.
